We’re offering a new computer science workshop series at Bret Harte Elementary school this winter! Learn about some of the many, many situations where computer science can be used in the world. We’ll introduce students to a number of different technologies and applications of computer science. Students can expect to learn something new each week and come away with a collection of projects. Students will try a bunch of things and can see what interests them the most! We’ll also provide lots of resources that they can access after the series ends, so they can continue learning on their own time. Email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information, or if your organization would like to get involved!
From Charlie Bright, Principal at Bret Harte Elementary School:
"I still get upset as I think about my transition from elementary school to high school. I graduated from a Chicago Public School that was very similar to Bret Harte in regards to race and income. As I compared by elementary school experience to others, I realized that other students were exposed to so much more. Now as principal, I am always seeking to offer the very best to my students.
Introducing our middle-school girls to the world of coding is something that I fully support. There are so many tech careers out there, and African-American girls are underrepresented in this field. Exposure at an early stage can make the difference. In addition to the introducing our girls to coding, CompileHer will also develop our students' critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. I am also looking forward to longer-term connections with CompileHer. I love that they take the girls on field trips to tech companies and have special 'design days'."
